The months with colors were created to raise awareness among the population about disease prevention and treatment, and even to debate other topics that deserve visibility . The initiatives would have started with Pink October , known worldwide and celebrated annually since the 90s, as an alert to the population about the prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer.
There are months with up to four different colors and in the Brother cell phone list month of September two colors attract attention: Blue and Yellow. And, if you don't know the importance of these campaigns, you will from now on! Let's tell a little about the story of each of them.
What is Blue September?
Known as the month of deaf people , September is marked by important dates for this community and, because of this, it was chosen to represent them. Likewise, the color blue has a relevant meaning, which for many may seem sad, but can also be seen as a symbol of pride and resistance of the deaf community.
During World War II, deaf people and people with other disabilities were considered inferior by the Nazis, and to identify them, they were forced to wear a blue band on their arm. However, after the end of the war and as the years passed, the color began to have a new meaning. This resignification of blue was marked during the Blue Ribbon Ceremony , which remembered deaf victims of oppression. At this event, Dr. Patty Ladd (deaf) wore a ribbon of this color on her arm, for the first time as a symbol of the movement.
Today, turquoise blue is used to represent the cultural richness of a community that shines with great pride. Many actions and campaigns are carried out throughout the month as a way of giving a voice to deaf people and encouraging society to make the world a more inclusive place, even with small actions.
Why Yellow September?
Also celebrated in the month of September, World Suicide Prevention Day was established to draw the population's attention to this serious problem. As a way to mark the date, the CVV (Center for the Valorization of Life) , the CFM (Federal Council of Medicine) and the ABP (Brazilian Psychiatry Association) created, in 2015, the Yellow September campaign .
The color was adopted because of a sad story. In 1994, Mike Emme, a 17-year-old American, took his own life by crashing his yellow Mustang. Her friends and family distributed yellow flowers during the funeral, and tied yellow ribbons in her hair, clothes and hats. After that, they began making yellow papers available to the population with the message “please don't do this, please talk to someone” along with telephone numbers for anyone who needed to ask for help.
